I’m an Afro-Latina artist that recently received my B.A. in Visual and Public Art. Through recent experiences, I realized the importance and practice of Self- Love. For inspiration of my art, I use people of color and their hair as a platform to educate others on black culture. I want to be an advocate of self love for people of color through my art. Even though I am still finding myself as a young Blatina woman, artist and person, I am slowly embracing the aesthetic in these areas of my life. I now appreciate my hair, skin, and heritage. I take great pride in all these characteristics, and I am proud to be who I am in these rich gifts I get to carry with me.
In a field of perception, my artistic practice observes hair discrimination and promotion of self-love. Using graphite, acrylic paint, and mixed media, my artwork conveys association of discrimination with psychological liberation by emphasizing the delicacy of curly hair throughout my pieces. In belief these forms of judgement are causing substantial psychological and physical harm to those who want to preserve their natural hairstyles but are obligated to choose between an essential setting over their own cultural individuality, I choose to promote the concept of tribulation, liberation and self-respect. Prejudice continues to have an impact on the inner well-being of Black people. Therefore, it’s crucial that my work focuses on hair discrimination as a cultural bias and show how this injustice leads to the depletion of self-love and mental health concerns. Inspired by personal experience, I want to educate, influence, and empower every community in valuing the beauty in people of color.
No one can tell our stories, monetize our lives or take away our power for we plan to become all that we can be, and we REFUSE to be defined by others just from our hair and skin. We resolve no longer to let others press us into their molds and we are going to be who God created us to be. We may not be everyone’s favorite color, but our Brawn Brown skin and exemplifying resilience, is needed to complete the bigger picture for we are fearfully and wonderfully made, Children of God beautifully Crowned in our Curls and Bronzed in Elegance.
Inspired by Psalm 139:14 & 1 Thessalonians 2:4
